What Is Custom Metal Stamping?

Custom metal stamping is a metal manufacturing process that uses the metal stamping technique to create custom metal parts. It all starts with an engineering team that creates a custom design for the dies. This step usually involves a group of design engineers who create metal designs that are appropriate for specific use-cases.

The metal designs are then used to create metal stamping dies. It is during this stage the manufacturers decide the type of custom metal stamping. For precision custom stamping parts, a progressive metal stamping die is preferred.

Metal stamping technique involves operations such as bending, cutting, embossing, trimming, drawing, etc. A custom metal stamping operation considers material, application, dimension, product processes, etc., about your requirements.

Therefore, the custom metal stamping process offers customized stamping procedures, steel stamping, die-stamping production, and much more. From start to finish, every process including a metal stamping die is customized to your needs.

Types Of Sheet Metal Stamping Die Techniques

Some of the most common metal stamping techniques are:

Progressive Die Stamping

Progressive die stamping includes a series of stations that serve different metal stamping operations. The metal sheet moves along a stock guide from one station to another.

The metal part stays connected to the metal strip throughout the process and is removed only at the end. It ensures speed and accuracy.

Progressive metal stamping is a common choice for mass production of small and medium-sized metal parts at low cost, fewer scraps, and high accuracy. The die is long-lasting, so it has a high repeatability rate. However, for large and limited quantity metal parts, the die may not be the best option.

Transfer Die Stamping

Transfer die stamping also has different workstations in which each station is assigned a particular metal operation as per the design requirements of the metal parts. Here, the metal strip is fed to the pressing table, and it moves along the stock guide. A mechanical transport system moves the metal part from one station to another. So after each operation, the metal is detached from the strip to lift and place on the next workstation.

Transfer dies are a good option when the metal part design demands that it be free from metal strips during the process. It can either be a single stroke or a series like that in a progressive metal stamping technique. It has relatively lower tooling costs and is versatile.

Since it includes the removal of the metal part from strips, it can produce features like cut-outs, ribs, knurls, threading, and pierced holes.

Fine Blanking

Fine blanking or fine-edge blanking is a single-step metal stamping technique that uses cold extrusion. Therefore, it has a relatively lower fabrication cost. Manufacturers generally use it when the metal part requires flatness and full-sheared edge. They either use hydraulic or mechanical presses and, in some cases, a combination of both. The choice depends on the number of metal parts required and its design.

Fine blanking typically involves the workpiece clamp that holds the work material, blanking operation, and metal part ejection.

Metal Stamps Around Us

You may be surprised by the number of metal stamps you can find by just glancing around your room, office, or even if you are traveling. Most of the appliances, gadgets, automobile parts, agricultural tools, and machinery at factories are either completely metal stamped or have metal stamped parts in them.

Some common examples are switchboard covers, steel cups, bottles, mobile covers, and the list is endless.

Even the appliances at home, like television, ovens, grinders, etc., have some metal stamped parts in them. Your car’s body cover is a classic example of a metal-stamped part.

Conclusion

Metal stamping dies are an integral part of the metal manufacturing process. Most of the custom metal stamping die manufacturers use the latest technologies to ensure high precision and accuracy of metal parts. These custom stamping parts perfectly fit their respective applications.
